Three new energy-efficient five-bedroom family homes – built through the partnership of Barnet Council and Barnet Homes – will be officially opened on Friday.
The detached properties, which will be put into use as much needed temporary accommodation for people in housing need, are state-of-the-art and replace three blocks of outdated hostel accommodation, in Summers Lane, Finchley.
And ‘green’ measures will place the homes at the cutting edge of property development. Solar panels provide the power for hot water and enhanced roof insulation and double glazing mean the properties have achieved the highest possible rating for thermal insulation.
They are fitted with condensing boilers and thermostatic valves on every radiator, and ‘low e-glass’ is used in double glazed windows, to prevent overheating from the sun. They are also kitted out with digital aerials in preparation for the nationwide switch over to digital television.
Councillor Lynne Hillan, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: "The council is looking to become more environmentally friendly across all services, and this is just one example of how we can practically be more 'green'.
"As well as the green benefits, I think these properties will provide an excellent living environment for the families placed here, and helps the council in its quest to find more family-sized homes for those in housing need."
