A performance poet will lead a poetry workshop and recite his own verse as part of Brent Carers’ Week, which will also feature dozens of other activities for carers.
Neal Zetter will perform once at the Willesden Green Library Centre during Brent Carers’ Week, which will be held this year from June 11-17.
He has played for 10 years on the West End comedy circuit, performed at the Royal Festival Hall, theatres, pubs, music venues, schools, colleges and been published in The Guardian and has self-published six volumes of his own poetry. Neal’s poetry workshops are designed to improve confidence, self-expression, creativity and communication skills.
Other events for carers include belly dancing, free swimming and sauna, fingernail art, watercolour painting, a tea dance, computer training, flower arranging, drop-in advice sessions, Indian head and shoulder massage, and flower arranging.
A carer is defined as a person who looks after a relative, child or friend who because of their disability, illness or frail condition cannot manage without his or her support.
There are an estimated 23,650 carers in the borough, and Brent Council’s Housing and Community Care Department is helping to organise the special week to provide events and activities for carers, in partnership with the Brent Carers Centre.
Vijya Shah, who lives in Kenton and has been a carer for more than 20 years, said: “Carers’ week is a gift for a person like me because of all it offers. It means you can get to meet a lot of other carers and take part in some really great things. Being a carer is hard work, but definitely has advantages because you can develop as a person.”
Fay Austin, Brent Council users and carers development worker, said: “The week is a great opportunity for carers to meet others, learn new skills, and have a lot of fun. There are many carers in the borough and we want to make sure their efforts are recognised.”
